UI Design based on Design principles for machine learning
This was a bootcamp project where I had to design the UI for the app version of LocalEyez which currently only has a web version. LocalEyez is an app that suggests events and experiences determined by your interests. The app will use your location, time of year, month, week, interests and information about you to provide you with personalised activities.
My role in the project was to design the UI based on design principles for machine learning using the following brief for the deliverables:
Onboarding: Your team wants to see an onboarding flow that's similar to MeetUp or Flipboard's onboarding process. Do you have any ideas on how to make this process more intuitive?
Remixed layout of "The Feed" for mobile: Your team wants to see how The Feed will look on a mobile platform. What changes will you make to the design? What patterns will you use?
Using all the resources provided to me, I identified all the data that would need to be collected during the onboarding stage to determine what screens would be required. I then ensured the rest of the app followed the same design patterns as the web counterpart.
Skips options for flexibility and user control
Progress dots to allow users to know exactly how far they’ve progressed and how far left to go
Animated feedback on what has been selected
Large touch areas
A first-time screen was added for new users allowing them to see what the app has to offer straight away to avoid the user having to see a blank feed.
The rest of the app keeps all the sections of the desktop site, using tabs to separate the sections and avoid long scrolling for a better user experience.
As users continue to use the app, the app will learn the users’ habits and interests through their inputs and past events. This improves user retention as it will give the user what they want even before the user even realise they want it.
Due to constraints, long-term user testing and the impact the app will have on its users and the local community (e.g. increased participation in events, more unique activities popping up etc) cannot be done. However, usability testing of the initial app has shown that users found the app intuitive and easy to use.
Have a ‘Similar to this’ under events they’re interested in to find similar events as well as have filters to make looking for specific types of events easier
Users have mentioned wanting a way to find and meet other participants at events, however, this can lead to Data Privacy and Security challenges.
The app has the potential to increase collaborations and partnerships with both bigger companies (giving our users special app discounts etc.) as well as help support small local businesses.
